Early Morning, part II:

So Thursday was another morning... another early morning.... 6:30 am. Bah. We did practice again and it went really well. Laura is singing for us and I am super happy about that. She decided that she wanted to do a song of her own and chose a song that she wrote called “Sugna’s Song” ... the song was about a little girl that Laura connected with in our first village. It was beautiful... even at 7ish in the morning... I think I cried.

Anywho... so last night was the song writer’s night and it was awesome. I decided 5 minutes after I got there that I wanted to do a special ditty of my own... a song that seems to plague me every time that there is coffee house or song writer’s night. This time I jumped off the deep end and performed a solo number... the only solo number that I’ve ever been able to do.... if you know the song, it is one that should have been dead and buried a long time ago: “Drop the Chalupa”.

It was glorious. I think I said something about not being a big rock star and that this was probably going to be a the worst song that they ever heard. I told the story of the song’s background and forging. “One night at a youth retreat some time ago, three of my very best friends and I were asked to write a song for the next month’s youth group theme. We thought this was cool accept for one small issue... the next month was Febuary and his theme was love... he asked four dateless losers to write a song on love. So here is the product of 4 people who have had no luck in that field... it’s called “Drop the Chalupa” and it’s a song about a date gone bad... I hope you hate it.”

It went so amazingly well for not playing it in a while. People laughed and there were even claps with the song. Brent came up to me after and was like “Dude, I didn’t know you were doing that! I leaned over to Jason when you first started talking and said ‘Oh man, this is social suicide... I dunno if I can watch’, but you delivered. It was the best I’ve ever heard that song done.”

It was funny because I was one of two people to do goofy songs in the song writer’s night. Everyone else did worship-type songs.... I guess my justification to do “DtC” is that it had the main staple of every worship song..... G.... D..... E minor.... and C.

Oh yeah - and the band song went really well too ;)

Early Day....part 1:

I’m a musician. I love music. I am very blessed to be able to play and that I have awesome parents that have encouraged that talent. I’m not saying or proclaiming my standing among other players. What I am saying is that God has given me the ability to play and parents to support me. I say this all as an introduction to why today was an early day.

Last year, the school did a song writer’s night and I played guitar for a guy on campus (Jason DeRoche). We planned to do something different this year for that night. Jason had a song that he wrote and he wanted to play it with a full band. Being that he knows how I play and likes my style, he asked me to help him out with it. There was only one problem.... Song Writer’s Night is this Thursday....and we’ve practiced together twice.

In a mad rush to get the chapel to actually practice... they decided that the best practice time is at 7 AM. You have to be joking me.... I’m not even civil at that time, let alone having to get ready and being awake. To top that off, they wanted to meet at 6:45 for breakfast... I woke up at 6:30.... was there for breakfast at 6:34.....no one was there. I was thinking to myself at 6:45.... “is this their form of a sick joke?” Soon after, J showed up.... but no one else....

“Is this their idea of a sick joke?”

We went and woke up Woz... a freshman and our drummer (Paul Wossula... don’t think it’s the proper spelling) and headed down to the chapel... guess what.... it’s locked.

“Is this their idea of a sick joke?”

The cleaning lady opened it up after we spent about 5 or so minutes standing in the foggy cold. A few minutes later Woz showed up.... and 15 minutes after that Laura showed up apologizing for being late and explaining that she had not slept well because she was crying out before the porcelain thrown at 5 am.

All things said.... practice was tight and it sounds good. So this Thursday night “Until We Have Faces” will take the platform.

To be continued....

Death to Morning People:

Do any of you remember the cartoon “Daria”? For those of you who don’t, “Daria” was a cartoon about a high school girl who had a bluntly negative attitude about everything. Today.... today is a “Daria” day for me.

First off, I’d just like to say that I hate mornings. Not every morning is bad, but it seems that this morning is especially terrible. It all started with waking up.... everything else went downhill from there. Next, I found out that I had misspelled Pastor John’s last name when I printed it out last night. This meant that I had to start my computer early and print it out the the last staple in this area. Then is only got worse....breakfast.

Let me make a disclaimer...the only things good that happened at breakfast this morning was the people I sat with and the waffles that I ate. Immediately after I retrieved my waffles from the toaster, the first offender started up on me. “How bout a smile Damien.... it’s for the people”. I may be president, but I wish that I had a secret service agent to take him out! I almost lost my salvation thinking about how aggravated that made me. Thankfully, I was sitting with people of the same outlook on overly cheery morning people

Maybe it doesn’t sound all that bad to you, but guess what, I don’t care what you think right now because it’s morning and it sucks!
